They say everything is bigger in Texas, and one mom just proved that the saying applies to newborns too. The mother, Markie Smith, recently went viral after sharing the story behind her baby boy’s impressively large debut and the name she chose for him is so fitting it feels almost destiny-level perfect.
Smith, 35, gave birth at Arlington Memorial Hospital in Texas, fully expecting a healthy baby but not quite prepared for the moment her son entered the world and stunned everyone in the delivery room. The reaction was immediate and dramatic. “There was this gasp and everyone just went, ‘Oh, my God,’ all at once,” Smith recalled. Lying there exhausted and confused, she remembers thinking something might be wrong. “I was lying there totally out of it, like, ‘What? Is he OK?’”
As it turns out, he was more than OK, he was just massive. Smith looked to her best friend, who was by her side during delivery, for answers. “She just looked at me and said, ‘Girl, he’s huge,’” Smith said. Before he was born, Smith had chosen the name Canyon. After seeing her baby’s size and rolls, she knew she’d nailed it. “He reminded me of the Michelin Man! Just rolls and rolls,” she said. Canyon was born weighing just under 13 pounds, significantly larger than the national average of 6 to 9 pounds for newborns. In true Texas fashion, he arrived making a very big first impression.
While Canyon’s size surprised plenty of people in the room, it wasn’t entirely shocking for Smith. She previously gave birth to two larger-than-average babies due to gestational diabetes, a condition that can cause babies to grow bigger during pregnancy. Still, even with that history, Canyon managed to stand out.
“Canyon is the perfect name for him,” Smith said and her friends and family wholeheartedly agreed. Almost immediately, loved ones started coming up with playful nicknames, including “the Grand Canyon,” a nod to his size, and “Super Cooper,” referencing his middle name. The outdoorsy name also fits seamlessly with his siblings’ names, Meadow, 9, and Forest, 4, giving the family a full nature-inspired lineup.

After his birth, Canyon spent time in the NICU learning how to breathe on his own, a scary but necessary step. Thankfully, his story took a joyful turn when he was discharged on Christmas Eve, making the holiday even more meaningful for the Smith family. “Such a cool name!” one person commented. “Can we just bring back normal names?” added another. “That name Canyon seems kind of mean, especially if his large size continues into childhood,” a third person revealed. “Canyon is a super cool name … my nephew was HUGE when he was born too and like most babies, he lost the baby fat and is an average sized 12 year old boy now!
